Peace Corps Timeline

Sunday, February 1, 2009 | 4:49 pm

I’ve had a couple people inquire about the process of becoming a Peace Corps volunteer. So today, I’ve decided to post a timeline that documents my journey through the process. The time frame varies for everyone, depending on applicant skills, country needs, medical/dental clearance, finishing university courses, etc. There is lots of [...]

New Address

Friday, January 23, 2009 | 11:07 am

I have a new address. Don’t worry if you have something in transit to me already; Peace Corps will make sure I get it, eventually. But my site is 10-12 hours from Nairobi, so the truck doesn’t make it out here with mail very often.
You can send all future mail and packages to [...]

Last Night in The United States

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 | 11:07 pm

Well, here we are. My last night in the United States. I had a lovely dinner with two of my peers at a little place called the White Dog Cafe. I chose the a bacon cheeseburger with chips and a divine chololate mousse dessert. I followed that up with a [...]

Obama-Rama

Thursday, November 6, 2008 | 10:47 pm

I hear that Obama is a bit of a celebrity in Kenya, since his father was a Kenyan. So I went down to the local Democratic Party office today, where I met a very nice man named Bob. After hearing my impeding trip with the Peace Corps, he hooked me up with some [...]

Test Pack

Thursday, November 6, 2008 | 10:16 pm

I’m in the process of conducting a “test pack” to see if I can bring all my things and still stay within the luggage requirements. I’m allowed 80 pounds of luggage between 2 checked bags, with no single bag weighing more than 50 pounds. The total dimensions of both bags cannot exceed 107 [...]

Change In Plans

Wednesday, November 5, 2008 | 4:35 pm

I just learned that I will not be training in Embu, as my Invitation announced, but rather, in Loitokitok, a town near the base of Mount Kilamanjaro. I can’t wait to see the tallest mountain in Africa - I’ll have to post pictures!
I’m actually quite excited about this change in plan, as [...]

Internet Browsers

Friday, October 31, 2008 | 12:17 pm

Hey all,
To my dismay, I’ve discovered that Internet Explorer 6 isn’t displaying the site correctly. If you use Firefox 3 or IE 7, you’re probably good to go. I’m investigating the problem now and will hopefully have it corrected soon. In the meantime, why not upgrade?

Welcome to Kenya Rising!

Thursday, October 23, 2008 | 11:57 pm

Hello friends. I’m glad you’ve come for a visit! This is my personal blog space, in which I hope to a) chronicle my journey in the Peace Corps, b) keep in touch with my friends and family back home, and c) achieve Goal 3 of the Peace Corps Mission Statement.
I’ve been keeping a [...]

Staging Kit

Saturday, October 18, 2008 | 12:18 pm

I got my Staging Kit in the mail last night.  I’m flying to Philadelphia for a day and a half for some last-minute paperwork and orientation, then off to Kenya!
The travel schedule is pretty brutal.  I’ll have to catch a red-eye to Philly in order to make it there for 1:30pm registration. The next day, [...]

Say What?

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 | 8:01 am

I received an e-mail from the Peace Corps today; apparently there is even *more* paperwork that I need to submit.  This time the form is called a “Home Stay Questionnaire for Pre-Service Training” -  I assume that PC uses this document to help match me with a host family.  It is rife with grammar and punctuation errors [...]
