Post-Birthday Update
By Harmony | July 10, 2009 | 7:56 pm
I don’t feel like I have much to report today, but it has been a while since I last posted, and people tend to get worried if too much time passes between posts, so here I am to say I’m alive and well.
Swine flu has finally made it to Africa, and the first case in Kenya arrived just two weeks ago. As a precautionary measure, the Peace Corps Medical Team scheduled a mandatory medical clinic to administer flu shots, as well as a Hepatitis. I was already suffering one nasty cold, but I was assured that my reduced immune system would not be affected further by the shot. I dragged myself into Mombasa, got my shot, and then hopped on the ferry to get home before lunch.
On the ferry, I got pick-pocketed. I lost only my phone, which was in a front zipper pocket of my purse. I still don’t know exactly how it happened; I had my purse strapped across my shoulders, zippers zipped, flaps closed, with my arm across the top protecting its contents. I know the ferry is dangerous, and I wasn’t going to take any chances. I figure the thief got to me as we were all packing in close together, trying to get everyone on the boat. I didn’t even feel the tug on my zipper.
On the bright side, I got a shiny new replacement phone with even more cool features than the last one. This one is staying inside the big pocket with the flap though, where it will be harder to pilfer.
Last Saturday, I celebrated my 30th birthday. I thought it would be a low-key day spent with a couple friends. But then one friend became three, then five, and by the time the evening came, I was on my way to a dance club with seven people who were all there to celebrate my birthday with me! It was an awesome night, and I am so grateful to all of them for making my special day memorable!
The last week has been a blur. I don’t think I’ve made any progress at work, even though I try. I think I am still getting over a bit of that cold. I’m exhausted even after getting a good night’s sleep, and my appetite has nearly disappeared. I am hoping that some good rest this weekend (after all the cleaning and laundry-washing) will do me a bit of good.
So that’s that. Just a reminder, I’m on Facebook now (friends only, unless you can give me a compelling reason to add you) and I’m also on Twitter (my username is trombonebabe). Check it out.
