Wind Scorpions

This weekend, while hanging out at Jon’s house with Jon and Jeff, we saw the nastiest insect we’ve encountered since arriving in Africa. It was a spider, 4-5 inches big with huge mandibles. Jeff correctly identified it as a wind scorpion - also known as a wind spider, sun spider, or sun scorpion. We captured the thing in a glass jar, inspected it for a while, then released it outside.
We found a second wind scorpion while the first was confined to the jar. We had plans to capture it as well, but ended up chasing it outside, instead.
I don’t think they have a poisonous venom, but I bet they sting horribly. My mosquito net provided little comfort of protection that night, that’s for sure!
