Nairobi

I’m back in Nairobi for In-Service Training (IST). It’s really good to see Peace Corps friends again.
I took the train from Mombasa to Nairobi. We left at about 8pm on Thursday night, and arrived at 12pm on Friday. We paid extra to buy out the 4-compartment cabin (there were 3 of us), and splurged to get dinner and breakfast. The food was good, and they even have some of the silver from the original East African Railway! We watched the sunrise and saw a few animals as we passed through the parks. All in all, it was a fun experience.
Now, I’m at a hostel, hanging out with fellow volunteers. The owner has a birthday today, so the house will be packed with people here to celebrate. Today, I’m planning to see the “Kenya Burning,” a photo exhibit that shows images of the violence in the Western and Nyanza provinces that occurred last year after the elections. Should be interesting.
Tomorrow, I’m checking into the place where I’ll spend the next two weeks in training. The Peace Corps sent us a tentative itinerary of the training schedule, which appears to be packed.
After training is over, I’m heading to another town for a week-long training in permaculture. I am really looking forward to that training, as I think it could come in useful even after service. The town is at the base of Mount Kenya, so it should get pretty chilly. I am looking forward to being a little cold, after spending 3 months in the hot, humid, equatorial coast region.
That’s all the update I have for now. I may not have regular access to a computer for the next few weeks, but I’ll try to post if I can!
