My Bags Are Packed

By Harmony | November 9, 2008 | 8:11 pm

Well, here we are. I leave tomorrow for Philly, then I’m on my way to Kenya on Wednesday. All the loose ends are tied up. My bags are packed, quite literally.

My cell phone service ends tonight. This is a little scary for me, because although I don’t make a lot of calls, I like knowing that I can if I need to. I have a prepaid phone card in my wallet so I can call Steve from Philly to let him know my plane got in.

On the topic of cell phones, I have a recommendation for anyone who might be ready to serve - if you want to keep your cell phone number, ask your cell phone company if they will suspend your service, instead of canceling it. I have T-Mobile, and I was smart enough to ask them if they could do that for me. According to their policy, they can suspend service up to 24 months (for free) for Peace Corps service. I informed them that Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment, and they were happy to extend it for me. All I had to do was ask! I hear other cell phone companies will do the same thing.

I had some challenges in getting all my affairs sorted out. My truck hasn’t sold yet, so Steve will have to do that for me. My benefits company hasn’t processed my company termination paperwork, so I haven’t been able to roll my 401(k) into an IRA yet. Apparently, someone in the Payroll department at my company didn’t get the paperwork either, so I unexpectedly received a paycheck on Friday (even though I was already paid out). My student loan company gave me the wrong paperwork to suspend my student loans. One of my credit card companies didn’t like the copy of the Power of Attorney I sent them, so I had to scramble to get a certified copy notarized.

But other than that, it’s all gone smoothly.

I might get an opportunity to post again from Philly…we’ll see. Otherwise, I’ll catch y’all later!
