They Called Me Back

By Harmony | July 14, 2008 | 9:06 am

I got a call this morning from a very cute-sounding Josh at the Africa Placement desk. He told me that my file will be reviewed soon, and hopefully I’ll hear back from them in a couple weeks. He also told me that my current placement (which could change) is scheduled to leave in “the front end” of October, which is earlier than I had originally thought.

I chatted with him for a few minutes and explained that I’m not the average future PCV; I’m not straight-out-of-college and living with my folks or in short-term housing. I explained that the end of my house lease is coming up and that I work in a specialized field and need more than a few weeks to get someone hired into my position at work. He seemed sympathetic to my needs and acknowledged that “mid-career” placements often need more time to tie up loose ends. I’m hoping he moves my file to the top of the stack.

Of course, he probably hears stories like mine all the time. He mentioned the “need to be flexible” more than once in our conversation, like he was reading a script. I wonder what it’s like to work in the Placement Office at the Peace Corps Headquarters. I bet it’s not the most fun job in the world.

So there it is for now. I still don’t know where I’m going, but at least I got acknowledgment.
