Peace Corps Mixer
By Harmony | May 3, 2008 | 10:50 am
I went to a Peace Corps mixer last night at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park. I got there more than an hour early, since I came straight from work. Jacob, my recruiter and organizer of the event, looked busy and stressed. I offered to help. So he sent me on a mission to find ice. I came back with two 40-pound bags.
The event was fun. I’m a little shy, so I wandered around for a bit, hoping to make eye contact with a friendly face. I found myself gravitating toward others who had been assigned to Africa. Some were returned volunteers, but most were future PCVs. I couldn’t find a single person who had worked or will work in Business Development, though. Bummer.
I’d heard that the average age of most volunteers is 25. Most of the people I met were a very young 22, many who are just graduating from college. I was a little surprised at how immature a few of them seemed (from what I could gather in a 5-minute conversation, anyway). Not that they won’t make really great volunteers. They definitely have the desire. They just have a little growing up to do. I wondered if I was like that when I was 22. I wonder if I come across like that now.
All in all, it was an interesting night.
