Foreign Films

In preparation for my future adventure to a French-speaking country, I’ve spent the last several weeks immersing myself in the language. I’m taking full advantage of Blockbuster’s $0.99 movies. Here’s what I’ve been watching lately. All are in French, with English subtitles:

An Affair of Love - Loved this one. Totally hot. I’ll probably want to own this someday.

Happily Ever After - I’m lukewarm about this one. I was pleased to discover that Johnny Depp makes an appearance in this movie, and yes, he does speak a little French. Oh la la!

My Wife Maurice - Not an award-winning film, but definitely comedic. Regis Laspales is hilarious.

Ma Mère - Perverse. Not at all what I was expecting. Sex, drugs, orgies, bondage, that sort of thing. And sex with Mom. Um, yeah. The whole thing was a little too weird for me.

À Tout de Suite - A girl tags along with her bank-robbing boyfriend, they travel all over Europe. This movie didn’t do much for me. Too slow. Beautiful filming locations, though.

Va Savoir - Enjoyable. Lives intertwined. Touching, yet fun. Slow, but expectingly so.

The Valet - Another low-grade comedy. I laughed my ass off. There’s even a short appearance by Noémie Lenoir - the beautiful Genevieve with the tatooed head in Rush Hour 3. I think she was a Victoria’s Secret model, too.

Amélie - I haven’t seen this one recently, but I own it and it’s one of my faves. My sister has this in her possession now. I have to remember to get it back from her soon!

Water - Not a French film (it’s in Hindi, with subtitles), but it caught my eye in the video store. A must see. Seriously. A gorgeous film set in India in the late 1930’s, during Gandhi’s rise. I cried.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen almost every French film at my local Blockbuster. I’m gonna have to hijack Steve’s Netflix queue next. Or swing by the library and see what they have available. Or watch my American films with French dub. LOL. I bet that would be fun.
