Interview Complete!

By Harmony | March 14, 2008 | 11:21 am

I had my interview for Peace Corps this morning. I think there’s a damn good chance that I’ll be going. I’ll get my “nomination” next week, where I’ll know my region, my discipline, and estimated departure date. The recruiter asked if I’d be willing to leave as early as September, as that’s when they ship a lot of volunteers overseas. I said I could probably work with that.

Based on preliminary data, it looks like my primary discipline will be in Business Development, with secondary disciplines in Health and Agriculture. I won’t know for sure until next week.

I asked the recruiter to give me some statistics about the probability of an applicant actually making it to the final stage of the process. I’ve already overcome the biggest hurdle - the application. In the interview phase, the recruiter told me that there is only about 1 in 20 who are *not* chosen, usually because they aren’t experienced or mature enough. I think I’m okay there.

Then, there is the Medical, Legal, and Suitability Review. Of those who pass the interview, only about 15% are declined for medical or legal reasons. I’m fairly certain that I’ll pass that with flying colors.

And that’s it. After the Medical Review, I get the “invitation” with an exact location and departure date.

So basically, I have an 85% chance of actually being accepted for service. And the remaining 15% is mitigated by the fact that I’m in good health with no real medical issues and no troubles with the law.

This is feeling more and more real by the minute! The next step: Break the news to my boss.
